Why? Built-in dishwashers require less cleaning. Dishwashers that are built in your counters will be better fitted than ones that are not.
Kitchens with built-in dishwashers have less gaps in between kitchen surfaces and cabinets. Less gaps in between the counters means less food falling down. Built-in dishwashers tend to have much more hygienic kitchens.
They also are generally prettier to look at. They pull kitchen appliances together to make a better looking kitchen. The dishwasher is meant to be there in the kitchen, instead of having an awkward, tall dishwasher that does not go well with the look of the other kitchen appliances or counters.
They can be built underneath the counters so they aren't easily spotted. Models are put underneath solid counters so you cannot see the top of the dishwasher. This sometimes makes the kitchen look nicer.
If you really want to make your kitchen look nicer you can install a false door front. False door fronts can make them look discreet or camouflaged so they are not easily spotted. These types of dishwashers match kitchen cupboards and are known as "hidden dishwashers".
Other types are available for kitchens. Free standing dishwashers work well enough for kitchens, as well as portable ones. Free standing dishwashers work well with apartments or town-homes.
